Our Mission
The Mission of Conococheague Institute for the Study of Cultural Heritage
Conococheague Institute serves as a regional center for the purpose of developing and fostering awareness, understanding and stewardship of the cultural and natural history of the Appalachian frontier of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. The Institute strives to achieve its mission through:
Education
l by promoting the stewardship of our cultural and natural heritage
l by developing and teaching curricula of study on the local history and environment
l by recruiting and training volunteers
l by developing a research and genealogical library
Interpretation
l by developing public exhibits on the frontier life of the West Conococheague region
l by creating walking trails and wayside exhibits on the local history and ecology
Research
l by furthering our understanding of the westward movement of settlers in Pennsylvania,
Maryland and Virginia during the 1700s
l by identifying the contributions made by the Native American, Welsh, Scotch, Irish, English and German inhabitants of the region
Preservation
l by preserving and restoring the Rock Hill farm site developed by the Davis (Davies),
Chambers and Negley families from the 1730s to the 1850s
l by developing a collection of historic objects of the West Conococheague region, dating
from the 1700s
l by serving as a center for rural preservation, cultural and environmental studies
To further its mission, Conococheague Institute actively seeks and builds affiliations with local and national historical organizations and genealogy groups.
